A. Establishment and objective:-


Department of Technical Education was separated from the Directorate of Industries, U.P. and had been established as an independent unit in the 1961 for the planned, chronological and coordinated development of technical education in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Directorate of Technical Education, U.P. is located at Kanpur. The department has been divided in two sectors viz. degree and diploma to provide standard technical education at Graduate/Post Graduate and Diploma level. At Diploma level, for effective control and management the dept. has been divided into four zones viz. East zone, West zone, Central zone and Bundelkhand zone with their zonal headquarters located at Varanasi, Meerut, Lucknow and Jhansi, respectively.
The Institute of Research, Development and Training for the development of curriculum and staff training has been established at Kanpur. The Board of Technical Education, Uttar Pradesh the office of which is located at Lucknow had been established in 1962 for affiliation and conducting examination of diploma level institutes. Joint Entrance Examination Council with its office at Lucknow had been similarly established in 1985 for conducting entrance examination for admission in diploma level. Technical education is the fundamental requirement for economic and industrial development of the state. To fulfill this requirement the Department of Technical Education is continuously afforting by establishing Engineering colleges and Diploma level institutes to supply technical manpower and remove regional imbalance. A revolutionary change in economic and industrial sector of the state has been noticed because of multifacet development in the field of Science and Technology and the Dept. of Technical Education is putting emphasis to achieve new horizons in their education, training and other programmes to cope with the changing scenario. The main objectives of the department are –

1. To raise the standard of technical education and to make it more useful according to the needs of the society & industries.
2. To develop technical education is planned and coordinated manner with a view of modernisation of industries, new technologies and increasing computerisation and to put empahsis and quality rather than expansion.
3. To work as resource agency for supplying technical manpower to organised industrial sector and small scale sectors.
4. To develop necessary inputs and facilitate to increase the involvement of women in the field of technical education.

B. Basic Information :–


1. To development of technical education, the Directorate of which is situated at Kanpur, had been separated from the department of industries and established as an independent department.
2. Board of technical education located at Lucknow had been established in 1962 for affiliation and conducting examination of Diploma level.
3. Joint entrance examination council situated at Lucknow had been established in 1985 for conducting the entrance examination for admission in diploma level institutes.
4. Institute of research, development and training situated at Kanpur had been established in 1984 for development of curriculum and staff training.
5. Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology for Handicapped, Kanpur is the only Diploma level institute for handicapped children in North India.
6. 52 Government Polytechnic are under construction. In which 34 polytechnics are aided by Central Govt., 12 polytechnics are in S.C.P.C., 03 Polytechnics are for SC populated districts and 03 are in nexalites area.
7. There are 18 girls polytechics having intake capacity of 4485.
8. There are 17 polytechics establishing in 15 district aided by Central Govt. under Multi Sectorail Development Plan.
